Blacksher win rare, unusual
I was somewhere around Faunsdale, about half-way home from Tuscaloosa last Saturday night, listening to the Auburn game on the radio, when I first began to wonder about the outcome of the Blacksher-J.F. Shields football game.
I told myself that I'd be able to get the score in Sunday morning's Mobile Register, so I really didn't think much more about it for several more hours. Much to my frustration, I got up Sunday morning and learned that someone had apparently stolen my Sunday morning paper.
With a shrug of the shoulders, I headed inside and tried to find the score online. No luck there either, it turned out.
The suspense was really starting to get to me at that point, mainly because I'd picked Shields to win in The Journal's weekly Pigskin Pickin's contest, a contest that the participants take VERY seriously. A Shields victory would have propelled me to a first-place finish, putting me ahead of my contest rivals - Mike Qualls, Labarin Banks and Jimmy Booker.
After more than a few calls and several e-mails, I would learn later in the day from a "Blacksher mom" that Blacksher beat Shields 2-0.
At that point, I shifted gears, mostly because I found the score interesting and unusual. To say the least, 2-0 games are rare and here are the details on where Blacksher's 2-0 victory over Shields fits into the big picture of high school football in Monroe County.
Out of all the football games played by Blacksher, Frisco City, Excel, Monroe Academy, Monroe County High School and Shields, Saturday night's 2-0 win was the lowest scoring game in 17 years - since Shields beat Georgiana 2-0 in Georgiana on Sept. 9, 1988. In fact, Saturday night's game was also only the second 2-0 game among county schools since 1966.
With that said, it should be noted that Saturday's 2-0 game wasn't the lowest scoring game in the county's modern history. Since 1966, in the days prior to overtime play, five games that involved our county teams ended in 0-0 ties - Excel at Ernest Ward on Sept. 22, 1978; Frisco City at Leroy on Sept. 24, 1982; Frisco City v. Coffeeville on Oct. 30, 1970; MA v. Grove Hill Academy on Sept. 3, 1976; and Blacksher at Coffeeville on Sept. 14, 1973.
With that said, let's look at this week's slate of games and how I feel those game will turn out.
Excel v. Bayside Academy: As crazy as it sounds, the ugly truth is that no team from Monroe County has ever beat Bayside in football. Bayside began its football program in 2002, and since then, teams from Monroe County are 0-6 against the Admirals. I look for tomorrow night's game between Excel and Bayside to be a hard-fought affair, but it just comes too soon after Excel's meeting with Leroy on Monday. Bayside 24, Excel 21
Frisco City at Millry: Frisco City handed Millry its only region loss of the season last year, and I'm looking for a repeat performance this season. I look for the Whippets to fair well against Millry unless the mojo of "Wildcat Hill"proves too much. Frisco City 18, Millry 12
Shields at Marengo: Shields has yet to put any points on the scoreboard this season, and it won't get any easier for them this week. If Shields can't get its offense going, it's going to be a long ride home this week from Dixons Mills. Marengo 7, Shields 0
Blacksher at Coffeeville: Blacksher hasn't beat Coffeeville since 2002, and they've only beat Coffeeville once since 1993. I look for Coffeeville to get its third-straight win over Blacksher and their first win of the season tomorrow night. Coffeeville 14-13
MCHS at B.C. Rain: The MCHS-B.C. Rain game should be a pretty exciting contest to watch. Both teams are pretty evenly matched, but I look for Rain's home-field advantage to be the deciding factor. B.C. Rain 21, MCHS 18
MA at Mobile Christian: By all accounts a road trip to Mobile Christian is never a pleasant affair, especially when the Leopards seem to be on the verge of breaking into the AISA's Top 10. I look for Mobile Christian to collect another win this week and hand MA its third-straight loss. Mobile Christian 21, MA 6
Miss. State at Auburn: Auburn's loss to Georgia Tech surprised more than a few football fans last Saturday, but the Tech win probably didn't help Mississippi State. I look for Auburn to get the win this week as the Tigers rebound from last week's season-opening loss. Auburn 20, Miss. State 18
Southern Miss. at Alabama: To get the win Saturday, Southern Miss. needs to do two things - have their defense stop Alabama running back Ken Darby and have their offense attack the right side of Alabama's defense. I don't look for the Eagles to get it done, so AU will get the win. Alabama 25, So. Miss 20
