Blacksher's explosion best effort since 1999
Last week's slate of football games for our local teams proved to be more than a little interesting, especially Blacksher's win over Coffeeville, Excel's win over Bayside and Frisco City's defeat at the hands of the Millry Wildcats.
Blacksher beat Coffeeville, 42-12, Friday night in Coffeeville, giving the Bulldogs their second straight region win of the season. Friday night's 30-point win was also Blacksher's first win over Coffeeville since the 2002 season, and it was just their second win over Coffeeville since 1993.
Friday night's game may also indicate that Blacksher's football program, under new head coach Greg Shehan, is on the rise. Blacksher's 42 points against Coffeeville was Blacksher's highest single-game point total in six seasons, going back to Blacksher's 42-0 win over John Essex on Sept. 24, 1999. (The 1999 season was also the last time the Bulldogs went to the state playoffs.) Friday night's point total is even more telling when you consider that Blacksher only scored 49 points during the entire 2001 season.
In other action Friday night, Excel whipped Bayside Academy, 26-14, in Excel to become the first team from Monroe County to ever beat Bayside Academy in football. More importantly, Excel got a much-needed region win. When you consider that Excel's win over Bayside came just four days after their meeting with Leroy, the No. 1 team in Class 2A, Friday night's win is even more impressive and speaks well of the preparation by Excel head coach Jodie Jones and his coaching staff.
On Tuesday of last week, Frisco City beat region rival, McIntosh, 61-6, in McIntosh, giving the Whippets their biggest win since Frisco's 56-0 win over Fruitdale on Sept. 20, 2002. Just three days later, on Friday night in Milly, Milly edged by Frisco, 20-18, thanks to a touchdown pass on the last play of the game.
Friday night's game probably determined the Region 1 championship, but the upshot for the Whippets is that they have a good chance of winning the rest of their regular season games. Don't be surprised if the Whippets finish the regular season with an 8-2 record. If they finish less than 7-3, they will not have played up to their potential this season.
With that said, let's take a look at this week's slate of games for our local teams:
Frisco City v. Fruitdale: Frisco City has only lost to Fruitdale once since 1989, and I don't look for that to change this week. Frisco beat Fruitdale 38-6 last season, and the Whippets should fare well tomorrow (Friday) night in their home opener in Frisco City. Frisco City 28, Fruitdale 19
J.F. Shields v. Coffeeville: Shields hasn't scored on Coffeeville in two years, and Shields hasn't beat Coffeeville since 2001. You can throw all of that out the window this week as Shields faces Coffeeville in their home opener tomorrow (Friday) night in Beatrice. Look for Shields to get the win over Coffeeville as the Panthers continue to show improvement on the offensive side of the ball for the second straight week. Shields 16, Coffeeville 14
Excel at Southern Choctaw: In five all-time meetings between the two schools in football, Excel has never beat Southern Choctaw. To make matter worse, Southern Choctaw enters this week's game as the No. 3 team in Class 2A, and coming off a 45-18 rolling of Georgiana last week. A win is possible for Excel this week, but they'll have to play a perfect game. Southern Choctaw 21, Excel 8
J.U. Blacksher v. Marengo: Blacksher enters this week's game with a two-game winning streak against Marengo, who is coming off a 20-12 win over Shields. Marengo enters this week's game with a 2-0 region record and scoring 30.0 points per game. I look for Marengo to get the win, unless Blacksher's defense can step it up a notch. Marengo 30, Blacksher 19
MCHS v. Blount: This game will boil down to sheer numbers. Blount will dress about 70 players for tonight's (Thursday's) game, while MCHS will dress about 40. Blount, coming off a 19-0 win over Shaw, will get the win over MCHS unless the Tigers can score over 20 points. Blount 14, MCHS 11
Monroe Academy v. Hooper: I think this game could really go either way, but I'm basing my pick on two things - Hooper's offensive and defensive performances in the first three games of the season. So far, Hooper is scoring 14.0 points a game, compared to MA's 12.7 points per game. On the other side of the ball, Hooper is allowing just 22.3 points per game, while MA is allowing 28.7 points per game. Hooper 14, Monroe Academy 13
Alabama at South Carolina: To get the win, Alabama will have to shut down South Carolina's passing game, which accounted for 236 passing yards against No. 9 Georgia Saturday in Athens. If South Carolina can throw the ball, it's going to be a long day for the Crimson Tide and a long flight back to Tuscaloosa from Columbia. Alabama 30, South Carolina 28
Auburn v. Ball State: What? Judson College didn't have an open date? Auburn 42, Ball State 7
