Week 5 features twists, turns
Week Five of local high school football is in the books, and it was another week of twists and turns for our area teams.
Excel beat J.F. Shields 53-12 Friday night in Beatrice. Excel's 53 points against Shields was Excel's highest single game point total in three seasons, going back to a 55-8 win over J.U. Blacksher on Oct. 31, 2002.
Monroe County High School beat Hillcrest High School 22-14 Friday night to record MCHS's second-straight win over the Evergreen school. Since the consolidation of public schools in Conecuh County in 1990, MCHS has posted a 7-9 record against Hillcrest.
Blacksher beat Goshen for the first time in school history on Friday night, upending the Eagles 31-8 at Uriah. So far this season, Blacksher's offense is scoring 20.8 points per game, second only in the county to Frisco City.
Frisco City, who's posting a county-best 34.6 points per game this season, got its second-straight win over Flomaton, beating the Hurricanes 42-7 Friday night at W.S. Neal High School's football stadium in East Brewton. Frisco's 35-point win over Flomaton on Friday was Frisco's biggest win ever over the Hurricanes and was just Frisco's fifth win over Flomaton since 1966.
With that said, let's take a look at this week's slate of games and how I feel they'll turn out:
Frisco City at Marengo County: Frisco City hasn't lost to Marengo in three seasons, and I don't look for that streak to end this week. I expect Frisco to get the win this week as long as they're able to overcome Marengo's notorious home field advantage. Frisco City 24, Marengo 8
Blacksher at Fruitdale: The only game this season in which Fruitdale has scored more than 10 points was in a 29-6 win over McIntosh, this year's whipping boy in 1A, Region 1. I look for Blacksher to get its third region win of the season Friday night, unless the long bus ride to Fruitdale takes its toll on the Bulldogs. Blacksher 21, Fruitdale 11
Monroe Academy at Faith Academy: Faith enters tomorrow night's game ranked No. 7 in the state among AISA schools. MA hasn't beat Faith since the 2002 season, and I don't look for that streak to end this week. Faith 33, MA17
Washington Co. at Excel: People should keep in mind that Excel's only two losses this season have came at the hands of the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams in the state in Class 2A. If Excel can get their running game going against Washington County this week, they've got a good chance of pulling this one out. Washington Co. 24, Excel 18
Williamson at MCHS: Williamson enters tomorrow night's game ranked No. 6 in the state among Class 5A schools, and that doesn't bode well for MCHS. MCHS hasn't beat Williamson since 1986, and I look for Williamson to squeak by MCHS this season. Williamson 20, MCHS 16
Millry at J.F. Shields: Shields hasn't beat Millry since 2001 and hasn't scored on the Wildcats in two seasons. I look for Shields to get on the scoreboard this week, but I don't think it will be enough to get the win over region-leading Millry. Millry 22, Shields 17
