Excel's win sets new marks

Another week of high school football has come and gone and not without a few surprises, twists and turns.
On Friday night in Flomaton, Excel beat the Flomaton Hurricanes, 56-7. Excel's 56 points against Flomaton was Excel's highest single game point total in four seasons, dating back to a 61-16 win over J.U. Blacksher on Nov. 2, 2001.
Friday night's 49-point win also tied Excel's biggest win ever over Flomaton, a 49-0 victory which took place last season on Oct. 15, 2004 in Excel. Friday night's win was also Excel's biggest win ever on Flomaton's home field, topping the school's previous big win there, a 41-point beating of the Hurricanes on Sept. 6, 1974.
In other action on Friday, Frisco City beat in-county rival, J.F. Shields, 16-6, in Frisco City. Friday night's Frisco-Shields game was the closest contest between the two schools in five years, going back to a six-point Shields win on Oct. 20, 2000 in Beatrice.
Also on Friday, Blacksher remained undefeated against McIntosh in football, beating the Demons 21-19 at John Sawyer Memorial Field at Uriah. Blacksher is 2-0 all-time against McIntosh, having beaten the Demons once in McIntosh and once on Blacksher's home turf at Uriah. Friday's win also gave Blacksher the school's fourth region win of the season, the most region wins in a single season by a Blacksher team since region play began in 2000.
With that said let's take a look at this week's slate of games and how I think they will turn out.
J.U. Blacksher at Frisco City: Frisco City, who has lost to Blacksher only twice in the past 18 years, is undefeated at home this season and that doesn't bode well for the traveling Blacksher Bulldogs this week. I look for Frisco's defense to be the difference in the game and for the Whippets to get their sixth straight win of the season Saturday night. FCHS 19, Blacksher 6
Georgiana at Excel: Excel, who hasn't lost to Georgiana in 14 years, should get their third straight win this week when they face the Georgiana Bulldogs in Excel Saturday night. Excel should come away with a win over 3-5 Georgiana unless the Bulldogs catch Excel looking ahead to next week's game against in-county rival, J.U. Blacksher. Excel 23, Georgiana 21
Fruitdale at J.F. Shields: Fruitdale hasn't scored on Shields since the 2003 season, and I don't think the Pirates are going to fair well against the Panthers this week in Beatrice. Shields has only lost to Fruitdale once in school history in "The Pit" in Beatrice, and I don't look for that to change this week. As long as Shields plays up to their potential on the defensive side of the ball, they'll come away with the win this week. Shields 18, Fruitdale 17
Monroe Academy at Edgewood: MA hasn't beat Edgewood since 1972, and I don't look for that streak to end this week. Edgewood, who hasn't lost a home game all season, enters this week's game ranked No. 5 in the state among AISA schools. MA could get the win, but their defense will have to play its best game of the season. Edgewood 31, MA 15
Saint Paul's at Monroe County High School: The brutal reality is that MCHS has never beat Saint Paul's in football, and don't expect that to change this week as Saint Paul's makes its first-ever trip to Monroeville for a football game. Saint Paul's offense is scoring an average of 21.3 points per game this season, and I think that will give them the edge they need to give them the win over MCHS tomorrow night. St. Paul's 21, MCHS 11
