Frisco City primed for meeting with Shields
Week Seven of local high school football is in the books, and it was another interesting week of twists and turns for our area teams.
Frisco City beat Coffeeville 52-0 Friday night in Frisco City to record the school's biggest win ever over the Coffeeville Panthers. Prior to Friday night, Frisco's biggest win ever over Coffeeville came in 1968, when the Whippets beat Coffeeville 46-0 in Frisco City.
Frisco's win on Friday night was also Frisco's third shutout win of the season. It was also just the sixth time in school history that the Whippets have shutout Coffeeville and was Frisco's first shutout against Coffeeville since 1988.
Frisco City, under the direction of third-year head coach Troy Quinn, has been on a historical tear during the past three weeks. In their last three games, the Whippets have beat Coffeeville 52-0, Marengo 54-0 and Flomaton 42-7. Those three wins were Frisco's biggest wins ever over those three individual opponents.
On Friday night, Shields beat McIntosh 32-0 in McIntosh. Friday night's win was Shields' sixth straight victory over McIntosh, dating back to the 1985 season when Shields beat McIntosh 18-6 in McIntosh.
Because of Friday night's shutout, McIntosh hasn't scored on Shields in two years. Friday night's win was also Shields' third shutout win over McIntosh in school history.
Also on Friday night, Excel beat Red Level 14-7 in Excel. Friday night's overtime win was Excel's ninth win over Red Level in the past 10 meetings between the two schools in football.
Red Level's seven points was also the fewest number of points scored by a Red Level team against Excel since 1995 when Excel blanked Red Level 48-0.
With that said, let's take a look at this week's slate of games and how I think they'll turn out:
J.F. Shields at Frisco City: Frisco enters tomorrow (Friday) night's game with a four-game winning streak, thanks in large part to their tough nosed defense, which is giving up just 5.7 points a game this season. Frisco is also undefeated on their home turf this season, and that doesn't bode well for the visiting J.F. Shields Panthers this week. FCHS 40, Shields 18
Excel at Flomaton: Excel has only lost to Flomaton three times since 1974, and I don't expect that to change this week. Flomaton enters tomorrow night's game with a 1-6 overall record, and they're giving up 38.9 points per game. Look for Excel to cruise to a win this week as the Panthers collect their third region win of the season. Excel 39, Flomaton 23
McIntosh at Blacksher: Blacksher has school pride on the line this week when they face McIntosh at Uriah. Blacksher has never lost to McIntosh in football, and McIntosh has never managed to put more than six points on the scoreboard against the Bulldogs. Blacksher should have the edge on offense and defense this week, and they'll have the home field advantage to boot. Blacksher 20, McIntosh 8
Monroe Academy at Morgan Academy: Morgan enters tomorrow night's game ranked No. 3 in the state among AISA schools. Morgan has also won six straight games this season, and they haven't lost to Monroe since the 2002 season. I think Morgan's defense, which is giving up just 7.1 points per game, will be the difference this week against Monroe. Morgan 31, Monroe 15
Monroe County at Wilcox Central: MCHS hasn't beaten Wilcox since the 1996 season, and I don't look for that streak to end this week. Both teams should be evenly matched, but I expect Wilcox Central's notorious home field advantage to be the difference in the game. Wilcox Central 18, MCHS 10
