Shields turns heads with 20-14 upset
Week Six of local high school football has come and gone and not without a few surprises.
J.F. Shields turned more than a few heads Friday night when they upset Millry, 20-14, in "The Pit" in Beatrice. Prior to Friday night, Shields had not beaten Millry since the 2001 season and had not scored on Millry in two years. In my book, Friday's win means that Shields will be headed to the playoffs at the end of the season, as long as the Panthers win two of their last three region games.
Also on Friday night, Blacksher got its fourth win of the season by beating Fruitdale, 18-13, in Fruitdale, guaranteeing Blacksher its best season since 1999, the last season that Blacksher won more than three games.
Blacksher's win over Fruitdale was also Blacksher's second-straight win, their first back-to-back victory in three seasons. Blacksher hasn't won three-straight games since 1999.
The 1999 season was also the last season that Blacksher went to the state playoffs. The Bulldogs are currently tied with Frisco City for first-place in the 1A, Region 1 standings, and I look for them to make the playoffs in a few weeks, unless they have some sort of unforeseen, end-of-season collapse.
In other action Friday night, Frisco City recorded the school's biggest win ever over Marengo County, beating Marengo 54-0 in Marengo. Friday night's win was Frisco's fourth-straight win over Marengo and Frisco's second shutout win of the season.
Frisco City is currently tied for first place in the 1A, Region 1 standings with Blacksher, but I think the Whippets will move into sole possession of the No. 1 spot very soon. I look for Frisco to win the rest of their region games and claim the region championship on their way to the school's sixth-straight playoff appearance.
With that said, let's take a look at this week's slate of games:
Coffeeville at Frisco City: Coffeeville hasn't won a game all season, and they're licking their wounds after a humiliating 35-0 loss to McIntosh last week. I look for Frisco to cruise to a win this week, unless Coffeeville catches the Whippets looking ahead to their meeting with in-county rival, J.F. Shields, next week. FCHS 38, Coffeeville 12
Blacksher at Millry: Millry has history on its side this week as they take on the Blacksher Bulldogs on "Wildcat Hill" in Millry. Blacksher hasn't beat Millry since 1992. In fact, Blacksher hasn't scored on Millry since the 2002 season, and Millry has shutout Blacksher in four of their last five meetings. Blacksher is capable of winning this game, but my gut says Millry will get the win. Millry 23, Blacksher 18
Red Level at Excel: Simply put, this is the biggest game of the season for the Excel Panthers. The brutal reality is that if Excel doesn't beat Red Level tomorrow night, Excel probably won't make the playoffs this season. I predict that this game will be a smashed-mouthed affair from start to finish. Excel 19, Red Level 18
Shields at McIntosh: Shields enters this game with a five-game winning streak against McIntosh, and McIntosh enters this game with a 1-5 overall record. I suspect that Shields will hand McIntosh their sixth loss of the season this week, unless the Demons catch Shields looking ahead to next week's meeting with Frisco City. Shields 18, McIntosh 9
Cottage Hill at Monroe Academy: Cottage Hill is scoring 14.6 points a game this season, and they're giving up 23.8 points a game. MA is scoring 14.5 points a game this year, and they're giving up 31.3 points per game. I look for Cottage Hill to get the win unless MA's defense can rise to the occasion. Cottage Hill 31, MA 24
Citronelle at Monroe County: Citronelle is 4-2 overall, and they've won three-straight games coming into this week's game with MCHS. Citronelle is also undefeated in road games this season, and that doesn't bode well for the home-standing Tigers this week. Citronelle 18, MCHS 12
