Who ya gonna call? Try these real life ghost hunters

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science." - Albert Einstein

I know that I'm tipping my hand about how much inner-nerd lies within my cold, hard reporter's heart, but I have to admit that I've really enjoyed the SciFi channel's new Wednesday night line-up.
This season, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday nights, SciFi has been airing its ongoing series "Ghost Hunters." This show follows two everyday, real-life plumbers, Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, who at night work as the lead investigators of a non-profit investigative unit that they call "TAPS." With the help of their team, they travel all over the country to try to disprove evidence of paranormal activity. They believe that if they can't debunk it, then they've found evidence of real after-life activity.
From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., SciFi airs the "Ghost Hunters" program from the previous week. From 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., the network airs a totally new "Ghost Hunters" show for the week.
Last week, I told a friend of mine, who works in law enforcement in the Mobile-area, about this show, and he told me that there are more than a few ghost-hunting clubs all across the state of Alabama. Out of curiosity, I looked into it, and learned that he was right.
Here's some information about some of these groups:
Mobile Order of Paranormal Investigators: MOPI is group of paranormal investigators from the Mobile area. The group, formed in 2003, investigates homes, cemeteries, historical sites and businesses. Each member of MOPI has their own specialty and their own personal stories of experiences and encounters with the paranormal. They hope to understand more about hauntings and spirits and to provide physical evidence of their existence. For more information, visit: www.mobileparanormal.com.
Lower Alabama Paranormal Research Group: Based in Mobile, this group believes in using "scientific methods, systematic processes and logical thinking for data collection and analysis." Through scientific data, they hope to come to a better understanding of ghosts and hauntings and hope to bring paranormal research into the scientific mainstream, their site said. For more information, visit www.laprg.org.
Alabama Foundation for Paranormal Research (AFPR): This group of paranormal researchers is "dedicated to the scientific approach of documenting life after death." Founded in 2001, the group conducts investigations in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia, and has been popularized by appearances on the Rick and Bubba radio show's Halloween specials. For more information, visit their website at www.alabamaparanormal.org.
Alabama Ghost Hunter's Society: This society is an informal group that meets at the homes of its various members. While most of them are "true believers," they've found it beneficial to keep a few skeptics in their ranks in their diligent search for "natural explanations for paranormal activity." For more information, visit http://ghostinvestigator.tripod.com/ghostinvestigators.
Office of Paranormal Research and Investigation: This organization, based in Selma, was formed with the intent to study, investigate, and research the unexplainable. The group's investigation team, featured recently on Channel 8 News, works side by side with other teams to unravel the paranormal. The group also has an "extensive research department" dedicated to finding the answers to questions about ghosts, hauntings, poltergeists, phantoms and all the other little things that go bump in the night. For more information, visit: www.expage.com/paranormalresearch.
Ghost Research Society of North Central Alabama: This society, based in Chilton County, gathers information through the use of scientific equipment such as electromagnetic field meters, temperature gauges, motion detectors, audio, and video equipment. For more information, visit: www.grsnca.drcomputerllc.net.
North Alabama Paranormal Research Society: NAPRS, based in Scottsboro, does allow non-members to tag along on their investigations, but they usually only do so when they're deciding whether or not to let you join. According to their website, they're "serious and dedicated" to their research and have little time for people who are bore and looking for a few kicks. For more information, visit www.naprs.us.
Alabama Ghost Hunting: This group of paranormal investigators, based in Pell City, is dedicated to finding answers to the unknown, their site said. They collect data about ghosts and hauntings by measuring electromagnetic, electrical and radioactive fields. They also use digital and film cameras, camcorders, night-vision equipment and thermal measuring devices. For more information, visit: http://geocities.com/alabamaghosthunting/.
