FC may set record

Last week's slate of football games for our local teams proved to be more than a little interesting, especially Frisco City's win over J.U. Blacksher, Excel's win over Georgiana and J.F. Shields' win over Fruitdale.
Frisco's 48-0 win over Blacksher Saturday night in Frisco City was FCHS's sixth straight win over Blacksher and Frisco's second-biggest win ever over Blacksher. Saturday night's shutout win was also Frisco's fourth shutout win this season and their eighth shutout of Blacksher in school history.
Speaking of school history, this year's Frisco City team is on the verge of breaking two major school records that have stood for 20 years. Prior to this season, Frisco's best defensive team took the field in 1985, a year in which the Whippets gave up just 100 points in 12 games, an average of 8.3 points per game.
So far this season, the Whippets have given up just 46 total points, an average of 5.1 points per game. As of Monday, based on points allowed through week nine, those were the best defensive numbers in the state in Class 1A. Brantley's defense was second in the state in Class 1A, having given up just 63 total points through week nine.
If Frisco's defense continues to play like it's been playing, the Whippets will finish the season with one of the best defenses in the state, if not the best. In the process, they'll also break Frisco City's school records for fewest points allowed in a single season and fewest points allowed per game.
In other action Saturday night, Excel beat Georgiana 14-12 in Excel. Excel's two-point win was the closest game ever in the series between the two schools, which Excel leads 8-6. Prior to Saturday night, the closest game between the two schools was a 6-3 Georgiana win in 1991.
On Friday night, Shields beat Fruitdale 12-10 in Beatrice. Shields' two-point win was the closest game ever in the series between the two schools, which Shields leads 4-2. Prior to Friday night, the closest game between the two schools was a 20-14 Fruitdale win in 2002.
Excel at J.U. Blacksher: Excel hasn't lost to Blacksher since 1993 and has lost to Blacksher only once since 1986. This week, I don't think Blacksher's defense will be able to stop Excel's running attack, which will be the difference in the game. Look for Excel to get its fourth straight win and to hand Blacksher their second straight loss as both teams tune up for the playoffs. Excel 22, Blacksher 18
Frisco City at Bayside Academy: Frisco City has never beat Bayside in football, but I look for that to change this week as the Whippets make their first-ever trip to Bayside Academy for a football game. Bayside has a decent team, but I don't think they'll fair well against FCHS's defense. FCHS 38, Bayside 21
J.F. Shields at Zion Chapel: To me, this game is a toss up. Both teams are 4-5 overall and went 4-3 in their respective regions. Shields appears to have the better defense, but I think Zion Chapel has the better offense. I'm going with the home team this week as Shields looks to close the season with a .500 mark. Shields 24, Zion Chapel 16
Monroe County at Saint James: MCHS has never beat Saint James in football, although MCHS always plays them close. MCHS is 0-2 all-time against Saint James, but both meetings were decided by seven or less points. I think Saint James' defense will be the difference this week, as MCHS's offense enters the game scoring just 10.9 points per game. Saint James 23, MCHS 11
Escambia Academy at Monroe Academy: MA has school pride on the line this week as they face over-achieving Escambia Academy. When they take the field this week, the Vols need to keep in mind that they've never been shutout by Escambia and they haven't lost to the boys from Canoe since 1998. Escambia 29, MA 16
