Frisco City continues to set new records
The 2005 regular season has come and gone, and the final week of the season featured more than a few notable games.
Frisco City beat Bayside Academy 22-21 Friday night in Daphne and broke two longstanding school records in the process.
Prior to this season, Frisco's best defensive team took the field in 1985, a year in which the Whippets gave up just 100 points in 12 games, an average of 8.3 points per game.
Taking into account Bayside's 21 points on Friday night, the 2005 Whippets finished the regular season allowing just 67 total points, an average of 6.7 points per game.
In addition, Frisco's win over Bayside was historic for a couple of other reasons. Friday night's win was Frisco City's first win ever over Bayside, which is in its fourth year of varsity football. Frisco also became the first team from Monroe County to beat Bayside on their home field.
In other action last week, Excel beat Blacksher 41-24 last Thursday at John Sawyer Memorial Field at Uriah. Last Thursday's win was Excel's 12th straight win over Blacksher and Excel's 18th win over Blacksher since 1986.
Monroe Academy also finished the season on a winning note, beating Escambia Academy 34-30 Friday night in Monroeville. Friday night's win was MA's seventh straight win over Escambia and the closest MA-Escambia game since Escambia won 33-30 in 1996. MA is 23-5-1 all-time against Escambia.
With that said, let's take a look at how our playoff bound teams - Frisco City, Excel and Blacksher - will fair this week.
Ariton at Frisco City: Frisco City opens its sixth straight trip to the 1A state playoffs Friday night against the Ariton Purple Cats, and this game promises to be a good one.
Both teams are 8-2 overall, and they both field tough defensive units. Frisco City is giving up a school-best 6.7 points a game this season, and Ariton gave up 12.7 points per game during the regular season this year.
Frisco does have history on its side this week. The Whippets, 1-1 all-time against Ariton, have never lost to the Purple Cats in Frisco City. Both previous meetings between the two teams took place in the second round of the state playoffs, and they haven't played each other since 1992.
Frisco City typically fairs well in the first round of the state playoffs. Since the state playoff system began in 1966, Frisco City has posted an 8-8 record in first round games.
In the end, I look for Frisco City to get the win this week in a hard fought battle between two decent teams. Frisco City 13, Ariton 7
Excel at Houston Academy: Excel has its work cut out for it this week as they take on undefeated Houston Academy in Dothan. Houston Academy, ranked No. 3 in the state in Class 2A, is scoring an average of 41.9 points per game this season, and they’re giving up just 9.8 points per game.
Excel can’t say that it has history on its side this week either. Excel and Houston Academy have met just once on the football field, in Excel’s last playoff appearance in 2002. Houston Academy won that game 38-0 in Dothan. Excel’s performances in first-round playoff games have been lukewarm. Since Excel’s first playoff appearance in 1969, Excel is 8-11 in first-round playoff games.
In the end, I think Houston Academy will out-man Excel unless the Panther defense plays its best game of the season. Houston Academy 42, Excel 24
Blacksher at Brantley: Blacksher will have its plate full this week when they go on the road to face the Brantley Bulldogs. Brantley, ranked No. 7 in the state in Class 1A, is scoring 37.4 points per game this season, and they’re giving up just 7.7 points per game. Brantley is also undefeated at home this season, and enters tomorrow night’s game on a nine-game winning streak.
Historically, Blacksher has not faired well against Brantley. Since 1966, Blacksher is 1-6 against Brantley, and Blacksher has never beat Brantley in Brantley. When the two teams have met in the playoffs (1976 and 1993), Brantley eliminated Blacksher from competition both times. Since Blacksher’s first playoff appearance in 1976, Blacksher is 3-6 in first-round playoff games.
Blacksher could win this game, but they will have to get on top early and find a way to keep Brantley’s offense in check. Brantley 24, Blacksher 8
