Continuing to take a look at best teams

Welcome to Part 2 of an on-going series of columns that will answer once and for all the following question: During what time was the best high school football in Monroe County played?
For those of you who didn’t catch my column last week, I kicked off the series with a recap of the performances of our local high school teams from 1966 to 1970. These comparisons are based on eight factors: overall records, 10-win seasons, winning seasons, points scored, points allowed, playoff appearances, playoff wins and state championships.
This week, I’ll take a look at how our local teams performed in the early 1970s, from 1971 to 1975.
During this time, Monroe Academy was the only school in the county to win a state championship. MA won three state championships during this five-year period and also collected one state runner-up trophy.
In the category of overall record from 1971 to 1975, Excel led the county with a 48-4-1 record, an outstanding winning percentage of .906. In other words, they lost only four games in five years.
MA came in second with a 52-10-1 record, a winning percentage of .825. J.U. Blacksher finished third with a 33-16-1 record, a winning percentage of .667. J.F. Shields, which started football under that name in 1972, came in fourth with a 25-11-3 record, a winning percentage of .641.
Monroe County High School came in fifth with a 22-25-2 record, a winning percentage of .449. Frisco City came in last with a 17-31-2 record, a winning percentage of .440.
Excel and MA were the only two schools to post 10-win seasons from 1971 to 1975. Both schools posted a remarkable four 10-win seasons each during this time.
Looking at the number of winning seasons by each school from 1971 to 1975, Excel led the county with five winning seasons. MA, Shields and Blacksher recorded four winning seasons each. MCHS posted one winning season, while Frisco City had no winning seasons during this time.
When it came to putting points on the scoreboard from 1971 to 1975, Excel led the county with 1,607 points in 53 games, an average of 30.3 points per game. MA followed closely with 1,905 points in 63 games, an average of 30.2 points per game.
Shields came in third with a 21.6 points per game average, and Blacksher finished fourth with a 19.2 points per game average. MCHS came in fifth with a 15.8 points per game average, and Frisco City finished last with a 13.1 points per game average.
When it came to keeping opponents out of the end zone from 1971 to 1975, Excel led the county. Excel’s opponents scored just 415 points in 53 games, an average of just 7.8 points per game.
Shields opponents managed 11.2 points per game, and Blacksher’s opponents scored 11. 4 points per game. MA gave up 13.2 points per game, while MCHS gave up 13.6 points per game. FCHS came in last, allowing opponents to score 17.4 points per game.
From 1971 to 1975, MA went to the state playoffs more than any other school. MA led the county with four trips to the playoffs during those five years. Excel came in second with three trips to the playoffs, and Shields made two playoff appearances. Frisco City, Blacksher and MCHS did not make the playoffs from 1971 to 1975.
MA was also the only school in the county to win a playoff game during this time. On their way to three state championships and one runner-up trophy, MA posted 11 playoff wins.
Taken altogether, our six local teams posted a 197-97-10 record from 1971 to 1975, a winning percentage of .648. Local teams posted eight 10-win seasons, and collected 18 total winning seasons. Our local teams scored an average of 21.7 points per game during the five-year period and gave up an average of 12.4 points per game. Local teams made nine total playoff appearances during this time, collected 11 playoff wins and three state championships.
In the end, it looks like Excel had the best five-year stretch from 1971 to 1975. MA finished second, and Shields came in third. Blacksher finished fourth, MCHS came in fifth and Frisco City finished last.
Next week, I plan to take a look at the performances of our local teams from 1976 to 1980. I plan to follow with reviews of 1981-1985, 1986-1990, 1991-1995, 1996-2000 and 2001-2005. In the end, I plan to compare all of the schools with each other and try to answer the question: During what time was the best football in Monroe County played?
