Excel teams top area from 1986 to 1990.
Welcome to Part Five of an on-going series of columns that will answer once and for all the following question: During what time was the best high school football in Monroe County played?
For those of you who didn’t catch my column the past four weeks, you missed comparisons of the performances of our local high school teams from 1966 to 1985. (These comparisons are based on eight factors: overall records, 10-win seasons, winning seasons, points scored, points allowed, playoff appearances, playoff wins and state championships.)
This week, I’ll take a look at how our local teams performed from 1986 to 1990.
In the category of overall record from 1986 to 1990, Excel led the county with a 47-16 overall record, a winning percentage of .770. Monroe Academy came in second with a 36-19 record, a winning percentage of .655. Monroe County High School finished third with a 36-21 record, a winning percentage of .632.
Frisco City came in fourth with a 20-30 record, a winning percentage of .400. J.U. Blacksher came in fifth with a 20-32 record, a winning percentage of .385. J.F. Shields came in last with a 19-31 record, a winning percentage of .380.
Three local teams recorded at least one 10-win season from 1986 to 1990. Excel posted four 10-win seasons during this time. MA and MCHS recorded one 10-win season each. Frisco City, Shields and Blacksher had no 10-win seasons during this time.
Three teams tied for the lead in the category of winning seasons from 1986 to 1990. Excel, MA and MCHS recorded four winning seasons each. Frisco City collected two winning seasons. Shields and Blacksher collected one winning season each during this time.
When it came to putting points on the scoreboard from 1986 to 1990, Excel led the county with 1,622 points in 61 games, an average of 26.6 points per game. MA followed with 1,145 points in 55 games, an average of 20.8 points per game. MCHS came in third with a 16.5 points per game average.
Shields finished fourth with a 14.7 points per game average. Frisco City came in fifth with an 11.8 points per game average, and Blacksher finished last with a 11.7 points per game average.
When it came to keeping opponents out of the end zone from 1986 to 1990, Excel led the county. Excel’s opponents scored just 533 points in 61 games, an average of just 8.7 points per game. MA’s opponents scored 627 points in 55 games, an average of 11.4 points per game. MCHS’s opponents managed 12.3 points per game, and Blacksher opponents scored 14.5 points per game. Shields gave up 16.0 points per game, and Frisco City came in last, allowing 19.0 points per game.
From 1986 to 1990, Excel and MA went to the state playoffs more than any other schools in the county. Both schools led the county with four trips to the playoffs each during those five years. MCHS followed with three trips to the playoffs, while Shields and Blacksher went to the playoffs twice each. Frisco City made one trip to the playoffs during this time.
Excel led the county in the category of playoff wins from 1986 to 1990. During this time, Excel posted a county-best seven playoff wins. MCHS followed with four playoff wins, while MA won one playoff game during this time. Frisco City, Shields and Blacksher did not win any playoff games during this time. During this same five-year stretch, no teams from Monroe County won a state championship.
Taken altogether, our six local teams posted a 178-147 record from 1986 to 1990, a winning percentage of .548. Local teams posted six 10-win seasons and collected 16 total winning seasons. Our local teams scored an average of 17.3 points per game during this five-year period and gave up an average of 13.4 points per game. Local teams made 16 total playoff appearances during this time, collected 12 playoff wins, but won no state championships.
In the end, it looks like Excel had the best five-year stretch from 1986 to 1990. MA finished second, and MCHS came in third. Blacksher, Frisco City and Shields actually tied for last place in the county.
Next week, I plan to take a look at the performances of our local teams from 1991 to 1995. I plan to follow with reviews of 1996-2000 and 2001-2005. In the end, I plan to compare all of the schools with each other and try to answer the question: During what time was the best football in Monroe County played?
