MA wins state title in 1979 to highlight 5-year period

Welcome to Part Three of an on-going series of columns that will answer once and for all the following question: During what time was the best high school football in Monroe County played?
For those of you who didn’t catch my column the past two weeks, you missed comparisons of the performances of our local high school teams from 1966 to 1975. (My comparisons are based on eight factors: overall records, 10-win seasons, winning seasons, points scored, points allowed, playoff appearances, playoff wins and state championships.)
This week, I’ll take a look at how our local teams performed from 1976 to 1980.
During this time, Monroe Academy was the only school in the county to win a state championship. MA won a state title in 1979, the school’s fifth state championship, by beating Jackson Academy 14-0 in Jackson.
In the category of overall record from 1976 to 1980, MA led the county with a 45-11-2 record, a winning percentage of .776. J.F. Shields came in second with a 36-17 record, a winning percentage of .679. J.U. Blacksher finished third with a 35-18 record, a winning percentage of .660.
Excel came in fourth with a 31-16-2 record, a winning percentage of .633. Frisco City came in fifth with a 30-23 record, a winning percentage of .566. Monroe County High School came in last with a 23-27 record, a winning percentage of .460.
Blacksher and MA were the only two schools in the county to post 10-win seasons from 1976 to 1980. Both schools recorded two 10-win seasons each during this time.
Looking at the number of winning seasons by each school from 1976 to 1980, Shields and MA led the county with five winning seasons each. Excel recorded four winning seasons. Frisco and Blacksher posted three winning seasons each, and MCHS collected two winning seasons.
When it came to putting points on the scoreboard from 1976 to 1980, Shields led the county with 1,350 points in 53 games, an average of 25.5 points per game. MA followed closely with 1,385 points in 58 games, an average of 23.9 points per game. Blacksher came in third with a 20.4 points per game average.
Excel finished fourth with an 18.4 points per game average. Frisco came in fifth with a 15.9 points per game average, and MCHS finished last with a 13.9 points per game average.
When it came to keeping opponents out of the end zone from 1976 to 1980, Excel led the county. Excel’s opponents scored just 474 points in 49 games, an average of just 9.7 points per game. MA’s opponents managed 9.9 points per game, and Blacksher’s opponents scored 10.2 points per game.
Shields gave up 13.6 points per game, which Frisco gave up 14.0 points per game. MCHS came in last, allowing 15.7 points per game.
From 1976 to 1980, Shields went to the state playoffs more than any other school in the county. Shields led the county with five trips to the playoffs during those five years. MA came in second with four trips to the playoffs. Frisco and Blacksher made two playoff appearances each. Excel and MCHS did not make the playoffs from 1976 to 1980.
MA won more playoff games than any other school in the county from 1976 to 1980. In four trips to the state playoffs, MA collected five playoff wins. Frisco and Blacksher collected a playoff win each during this time. Excel, Shield and MCHS did not win a playoff game during this time.
Taken altogether, our six local teams posted a 200-112-4 record from 1976 to 1980, a winning percentage of .633. Local teams posted four 10-win seasons, and collected 22 winning seasons. Our local teams scored an average of 19.8 points per game during this five-year period and gave up an average of 12.1 points per game. Local teams made 13 total playoff appearances during this time, collected seven playoff wins and one state championship.
In the end, it looks like MA had the best five-year stretch from 1976 to 1980. Shields finished second, and Blacksher came in third. Excel finished third, Frisco came in fifth and MCHS finished last.
Next week, I plan to take a look at the performances of our local teams from 1981 to 1985. I plan to follow with reviews of 1986-1990, 1991-1995, 1996-2000 and 2001-2005. In the end, I plan to compare all of the schools with each other and try to answer the question: During what time was the best football in Monroe County played?
