Monroe Academy sports top record
Welcome to Part Four of an on-going series of columns that will answer once and for all the following question: During what time was the best high school football in Monroe County played?
For those of you who didn’t catch my column the past three weeks, you missed comparisons of the performances of our local high school teams from 1966 to 1980. (These comparisons are based on eight factors: overall records, 10-win seasons, winning seasons, points scored, points allowed, playoff appearances, playoff wins and state championships.)
This week, I’ll take a look at how our local teams performed from 1981 to 1985.
In the category of overall record from 1981 to 1985, Monroe Academy led the county with a 40-16 overall record, a winning percentage of .714. Monroe County High School came in second with a 31-20 record, a winning percentage of .608. Frisco City finished third with a 28-21-2 record, a winning percentage of .549.
J.U. Blacksher came in fourth with a 22-29 record, a winning percentage of .431. J.F. Shields came in fifth with a 19-32 record, a winning percentage of .373. Excel came in last with a 10-40 record, a winning percentage of .200.
MA was the only school in the county to post a 10-win season from 1981 to 1985. Under head coach Rob Kelly, the Vols posted a 10-3 record in 1982 and went 10-2 in 1983.
Looking at the number of winning seasons by each school from 1981 to 1985, MCHS led the county with five winning seasons. MA recorded four winning seasons, and Frisco City posted three winning seasons. Blacksher collected two winnings seasons, and Shields had one winning season. Excel had no winning seasons during this time.
When it came to putting points on the scoreboard from 1981 to 1985, MA led the county with 1,260 points in 56 games, an average of 22.5 points per game. MCHS followed with 946 points in 51 games, an average of 18.5 points per game. Shields came in third with a 15.4 points per game average.
Frisco City finished fourth with a 14.7 points per game average. Blacksher came in fifth with a 13.0 points per game average, and Excel finished last with an 8.7 points per game average.
When it came to keeping opponents out of the end zone from 1981 to 1985, MCHS led the county. MCHS’s opponents scored just 566 points in 51 games, an average of just 11.1 points per game. Frisco City’s opponents managed 13.3 points per game, and MA’s opponents scored 14.5 points per game.
Blacksher gave up 16.8 points per game, while Shields gave up 17.7 points per game. Excel came in last, allowing 23.6 points per game.
From 1981 to 1985, MA went to the state playoffs more than any other school in the county. MA led the county with three trips to the playoffs during those five years. Shields came in second with two trips to the playoffs. Frisco City, MCHS and Blacksher each made one trip to the playoffs during this time. Excel did not make the playoffs from 1981 to 1985.
Frisco City and MA were the only two schools in the county to win playoff games from 1981 to 1985. During this time, both schools posted one playoff win each. During this same five-year stretch, no teams from Monroe County won a state championship.
Taken altogether, our six local teams posted a 150-158-2 record from 1981 to 1985, a winning percentage of .484. Local teams posted two 10-win seasons and collected 15 total winning seasons. Our local teams scored an average of 15.6 points per game during this five-year period and gave up an average of 16.1 points per game. Local teams made eight total playoff appearances during this time, collected two playoff wins, but won no state championships.
In the end, it looks like MA had the best five-year stretch from 1981 to 1985. MCHS finished second, and Frisco City came in third. Shields and Blacksher actually tied for fourth place, and Excel came in last in the county.
Next week, I plan to take a look at the performances of our local teams from 1986 to 1990. I plan to follow with reviews of 1991-1995, 1996-2000 and 2001-2005. In the end, I plan to compare all of the schools with each other and try to answer the question: During what time was the best football in Monroe County played?
