Part Six: Best teams from 1991-95
Welcome to Part Six of an ongoing series of columns that will answer once and for all the following question: During what time was the best high school football played in Monroe County?
For those of you who didn’t catch my column the past five weeks, you missed comparisons of our local high school teams from 1966 to 1990. (These comparisons are based on eight factors: overall records, number of 10-win seasons, number of winning seasons, points scored, points allowed, number of playoff appearances, playoff wins and state championships.)
This week, I’ll take a look at how our local teams performed from 1991 to 1995.
In the category of overall record from 1991 to 1995, Excel led the county with a 38-20 overall record, a winning percentage of .655. Frisco City came in second with a 35-24 record, a winning percentage of .593. J.U. Blacksher finished third with a 20-35 record, a winning percentage of .571.
J.F. Shields came in fourth with a 21-28 record, a winning percentage of .429. Monroe Academy came in fifth with a 23-31 record, a winning percentage of .426. Monroe County High School came in last with a 21-30 record, a winning percentage of .412.
Excel and Frisco City were the only two teams in the county to post a 10-win season between 1991 to 1995. Frisco City went 12-1 in 1992, and Excel went 10-3 in 1991. Shields, Blacksher, MA and MCHS had no 10-win seasons during this time.
In the category of winning seasons, Excel led the county with five winning seasons from 1991 to 1995. Frisco City collected three winning seasons during this time, and MCHS recorded two winning seasons. Shields, Blacksher and MA collected one winning season each during this time.
When it came to putting points on the scoreboard from 1991 to 1995, Excel led the county with 1,311 points in 58 games, an average of 22.6 points per game. Frisco City followed with 1,229 points in 59 games, an average of 20.8 points per game. Shields came in third with a 16.4 points per game average.
MCHS finished fourth with a 15.2 points per game average. MA came in fifth with a 14.0 points per game average, and Blacksher finished last with a 12.7 points per game average.
When it came to keeping opponents out of the end zone from 1991 to 1995, Excel led the county. Excel’s opponents scored just 815 points in 58 games, an average of 14.1 points per game. Frisco City’s opponents scored 896 points in 59 games, an average of 15.2 points per game. MCHS’s opponents managed 16.1 points per game, and Shields’ opponents scored 18.7 points per game. MA gave up 20.0 points per game, and Blacksher came in last, allowing 20.4 points per game.
From 1991 to 1995, Excel and Frisco City went to the state playoffs more than any other schools in the county. Both schools led the county with five trips to the playoffs each during those five years. Blacksher followed with three trips to the playoffs, while MA went to the playoffs twice. MCHS made one trip to the playoffs during this time. Shields did not make the playoffs from 1991 to 1995.
Frisco City led the county in the category of playoff wins from 1991 to 1995. During this time, Frisco City posted five playoff wins. Excel followed with three playoff wins, while Blacksher and MA won two playoff games each. Shields and MCHS did not win any playoff games during this time. During this same five-year stretch, no teams from Monroe County won a state championship.
Taken altogether, our six local teams posted a 158-168 record from 1991 to 1995, a winning percentage of .485. Local teams posted two 10-win seasons and collected 13 total winning seasons. Our local teams scored an average of 17.1 points per game during this five-year period and gave up an average of 17.3 points per game. Local teams made 16 total playoff appearances during this time, collected 12 playoff wins, but won no state championships.
In the end, it looks like Excel had the best five-year stretch from 1991 to 1995. Frisco City finished second. Shields, Blacksher and MCHS actually tied for third place, and MA came in last in the county.
Next week, I plan to take a look at the performances of our local teams from 1996 to 2000. I plan to follow with a review of 2001-2005. In the end, I plan to compare all of the schools with each other and try to answer the question: During what time was the best football played in Monroe County?
