More trivia to get in the mood for the 2006 high school football season
We’re one week closer to the official start of the 2006 high school football season, just 31 days from the start of practice and 56 days from the first football game. With that in mind, let's get into the football mood with a little local high school football trivia.
This week, the questions all come from the early 1980s. See if you can answer the following questions about high school football in Monroe County from 1980 to 1984.

1. Eugene Garrett. Garrett, a sophomore running back at MA, was named the Offensive Player of the Week because of his performance in MA’s 30-15 win over Jackson Academy on Sept. 12, 1980 in Jackson. Garrett ran for 165 yards on 22 carries and scored a touchdown. He also made a "spectacular" touchdown-saving tackle on the last play of the first half.
2. As of June 11 this year, Mike Qualls has been covering sports for The Journal for 25 years. On June 11, 1981, The Journal announced that Qualls, then age 25, would begin covering sports for The Journal. In that same edition, his first sports story, "Crispy Chick suffers first loss; Wiggins Hardware defeats D&S," appeared. Qualls’ long-running "From the Sidelines" sports column made its first appearance on Aug. 27, 1981. Qualls’ first high school football story, "Volunteers clinch win with quarterback sack," appeared on Sept. 3, 1981. Qualls was named The Journal’s sports editor on Oct. 29, 1981.
3. Al Bowen. Bowen, a junior linebacker at Frisco City, was named the Headhunter of the Week because of his performance in Frisco’s 18-6 win over Excel on Sept. 10, 1982 in Frisco City. Bowen collected nine solo tackles, two assists and recovered a fumble. Bowen became Excel’s head football coach in 1994.
4. Derek Hale was The Journal’s Headhunter of the Year in 1983. A senior noseguard at MCHS, Hale finished the season with 110 solos, 43 assists, 21 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and seven quarterback sacks. He also caused nine fumbles and recovered two.
5. Donald Foster, Michael McCrory and Steve Lambert. The game was played on Nov. 30, 1984 in Selma.
6. Mike Sasser left MCHS in 1980 to become the athletic director and head football coach at his alma mater, T.R. Miller in Brewton. Four years later, in 1984, Sasser guided Miller to the 4A state championship, beating Cherokee County 20-18 in the state finals.
